French American Biotech Symposium 2010 - Proceedings

The third edition of the French American Biotechnology Symposium (FABS) took place on March 16th at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, CA. This edition focused on "New Therapeutic and Vaccine Approaches in Infectious Diseases" and follows in the wake of the two first editions, held respectively at the Salk Institute in 2008 ant at the "Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon" in 2009. This event was co-organized by the Office for Science and Technology of the French Embassy in the United States and LyonBiopole - a French competitiveness cluster based in Lyon and focused on Infectious Diseases - with the support of the Salk Institute and French BioBeach. The FABS 2010 event aimed to promote cooperation in science and technology between American and French scientists and thus foster the emergence of innovative projects.

Pr. Roger Guillemin, Nobel Prize winner in Medicine and Distinguished Professor at the Salk Institute delivered a welcome talk, followed by David Martinon, Consul General of France in Los Angeles. 19 talks were then given by American and French scientists working in renowned research laboratories and firms during the two main sessions of the event. The morning session focused on Innovative Strategies in Vaccine Development and the afternoon session tackled Systems Biology and New Therapeutic Approaches. The talks were followed by discussion sessions chaired by Dennis Burton (The Scripps Research Institute), Shane Crotty (La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology), Christian Bréchot (Institut Mérieux) and John Young (The Salk Institute for Biological Studies) in front of an audience of 60 people. The discussions continued during the closing cocktail.

This day was dedicated to scientific exchanges and was part of a larger program including 2 "be-to-be" events called French BioTech Tour and organized by the San Francisco office of the French UbiFrance agency on March 15th in La Jolla and on march 17th in San Francisco. These events were dedicated to business development and industrial partnerships.
