Microalgae, sustainable biofuel of the future?

by Laurent PILON, PhD

Industrial and developing nations are facing an unprecedented combination of economic, demographic, environmental, and political challenges. They need to meet ever expanding energy needs and continued population growth without further impacting the climate and the environment. Intensive use of fossil fuels increases the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere and contributes to global climate changes. It is predicted that continued increase in carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere will have severe impact on sea levels, global climate patterns, and survival of many species. Consequently, growing energy needs call for greater reliance on a combination of fossil fuel-free renewable energy sources and on new technologies for capturing and converting CO2.

This Café des Sciences will present how microalgae can be used to mitigate CO2 emissions and produce biofuels in a sustainable manner.
