Polytechnique delegation visits Caltech : New Dual Masters Program

Leaders and researchers from Ecole Polytechnique, including Mr Yves Demay, President of Polytechnique (famously known as X), visited South California on March 4th and 5th 2013 in order to meet with the leaders of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), including Mr Jean-Lou Chameau, President of Caltech. They signed a new agreement for a Master’s Educational Exchange Program.

The two institutions have shared strong ties for many years, with the creation in 2007 of a dual masters in Fluid Mechanics between the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory (GALCIT, Caltech) and the Laboratoire d’hydrodynamique (Hydrodynamics Laboratory, X). This dual masters program was first implemented for the academic year of 2008-2009, and received the “Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in International Education” in 2010. It allows students to spend two years at both institutions, thereby benefiting from their high quality of teaching and high-tech equipment. The Dual Masters program was initially supported by a grant from the Partner University Fund (PUF) administered by the Embassy of France in Washington, DC.

The Polytechnique/Caltech agreement for a Master’s Educational Program signed on March 4th, 2013 between Mr Yves Demay and Mr Jean-Lou Chameau aims to broaden the dual masters program implemented in 2007. This new masters will be titled “Aeronautics/Space Engineering and Mechanics”. Taught and research subjects will include fluid mechanics, as well as aerospace engineering, computational mathematics and aeronautical sciences.

Caltech and Polytechnique are leading institutions, internationally renowned for the quality of their teaching and research projects. They have organized numerous student exchanges, generating crucial collaborative projects between France and the United States of America in the key area of spatial research.
